World Refugee Day 2019

World Refugee Day 2019

June 20th 2019

Why do we celebrate World Refugee Day?

Since the adoption by the United Nations in 2000, the commemoration of June 20th as International World Refugee Day has been observed by civil society organizations around the globe.

In a world where ever increasing violence and persecution has forced millions of people to flee their homes, we honor June 20th as a day to stand with refugees and their families, and to show our commitment to honor their dignity and human rights.

According the the latest UNHCR 2018 Annual Global Trends report, an estimated 71 million people have been forcibly displaced around the world. We are in the midst of an unprecedented crisis. From Ethiopia, Syria, Myanmar, to Venezuela, millions of refugees are having to make the heartbreaking decision to leave home and find safety in neighboring borders and countries around the world.

San Diego is experiencing this crisis first hand at our border.

How are we celebrating this year?

This year, we are asking our friends to commemorate World Refugee Day by giving to local groups who are providing support, assistance, and advocacy for refugees. You can support PANA by helping us reach 100 new donors on Thursday, June 20th, 2019. Your support will ensure PANA has the resource it needs to continue to support the following efforts:

  • Repeal the Ban: The NO BAN Act, S.1123 & H.R.2214, would repeal the Muslim bans, refugee bans, and asylum ban, and prevent the administration from setting such bans in the future.
  • Get Counted! : Promoting the equal count of all communities.
  • Housing for All: Protection for tenant rights.
  • Meeting the 30,000 resettlement goal it set for fiscal year 2019 - already a historic low - and to resettling 95,000 refugees in 2020

Why this is important in 2019

According the the latest Annual Global Trends report conducted by UNHCR in 2018, an estimated 71 million people have been forcibly displaced around the world. We are in the midst of an unprecedented crisis midst of historic increases in the rate of displaced persons yet seen on a global scale. From Ethiopia, Syria, Myanmar, to Venezuela, millions of refugees are having to make the heartbreaking decision to leave their homes to find safety in other regions of the world. At the same time, we are witnessing national disregard of this global crisis with our current administration accepting the fewest

We know here in San Diego that action is needed to address these important issues.

How are we celebrating this year?

This year, we are asking for your help to reach 100 new donors and interested individuals to support PANA's important work. Your support will ensure that PANA is able to support refugees by holding our local and federal governments accountable

PANA is also supporting national efforts to:

  • Repeal the Ban: The NO BAN Act, S.1123 & H.R.2214, would repeal the Muslim bans, refugee bans, and asylum ban, and prevent the administration from setting such bans in the future.
  • Get Counted! : Promoting the equal count of all communities.
  • Housing for All: Protection for tenant rights.
  • Meeting the 30,000 resettlement goal it set for fiscal year 2019 - already a historic low - and to resettling 95,000 refugees in 2020.
