Background

San Diego’s refugee communities face unique barriers accessing culturally and linguistically appropriate healthcare, finding affordable housing, education, and meaningful employment. These challenges create distrust, apathy, and create barriers to engagement and integration.

PANA was founded based on the understanding that our refugee communities can play a powerful role in strengthening the social fabric of our city. PANA is seeking ten undergraduate or graduate level research assistance to support its House Meetings and Leadership project.

You will

  • Conduct interviews, transcribe focus group discussions (House Meetings) with refugees to examine their experiences of housing, education, health, civic engagement, and other issues
  • Assist with qualitative and quantitative data input
  • Help establish a framework for socio-economic mobility and inclusion
  • Research Goals

    • A systemic review of issues that negatively impact families and the institutions and mechanisms that promote development and growth (i.e. education, affordable housing, etc).
    • A systemic review of housing, education, heath, civic engagement, and other policies that impact the economic opportunity, well-being, and social inclusion of refugees.
    • Identify policy and philanthropic opportunities and recommendations that undo structural inequity in San Diego.
